Blue Luster Weekly news 11.10.2009
Interviewed by David Carey, BL News writter
I had the chance to sit down with the outspoken and charismatic lead singer of Blue Luster to discuss the state of the band. Currently, BL has been on hiatus due to weddings, tour conflicts, and a dispute with their former manager. I wanted to get JD's thoughts on the whole subject and find out when Blue Luster will be back on schedule to rock the world.
Carey: Thanks for meeting me here
Brake: It's no problem. I didn't think they still had Chi-Chi's restaurants around. [Sniffs] It smells kind of funny
Carey: Sorry that was me. Anyways, J.D... (interrupted)
Brake: Please, call me J.D.
Carey: Ok, J.D. [awkward pause] what has Blue Luster been up to these last couple of months?
Brake: Well we've taken some time off from our busy schedule to write some music and give our new bass player (Jake McGuire) some time to get married, buy a new house and learn the catalog.
Carey: Busy schedule? You had six gigs over the last six months and two of them were canceled.
Brake: I know, right? I didn't even have time to myself it seemed like.
Carey: Sounds like it. Speaking of shows, you guys have one coming up in December, correct?
Brake: We do? [long pause] Oh yes! We do have a show coming up in December. It's our first show since August. We're playing at Birdy's again, which is one of our favorite spots to play. Recently, it seems like the only place in Indy (Indianapolis) that has live music anymore. Well, good live music anyways. That and Radio Radio.
Carey: What can we expect for this upcoming show?
Brake: We may have some new material to fit into the set list. If not, we're going to play some songs that we haven't played in a while
Carey: Such as?
Brake: I don't want to go into it, Dave. I mean, would you want me to reveal that Patrick Swayze's character was dead the whole time and ruin the end of the movie?
Carey: That was Bruce Willis. Patrick Swayze was in Ghost and the audience knew he was dead the whole time.
Brake: Well of course they did. It was all over the news. Don't you pay attention to anything?
Carey: Right. So rumor has it there is a dispute with your former manager.
Brake: Our lawyers have suggested we don't talk about it so we don't get in trouble for slander, on account that he's a dick.
Carey: My sources tell me that you are trying to get money back from him, even though you never paid him.
Brake: Yeah, that's what he kept saying. So ungrateful.
Carey: No, I mean you literally didn't pay him anything and you're trying to get your money back?
Brake: I don't know why there is such a big fuss. He should be complaining about all the times we prank called him at 3 am or put roofies in his drinks after the show so we could draw on him. [laughing] One time I drew the word "penis" on his forehead. It was so funny. If that ever got out, we'd be in big trouble for sure.
Carey: Ok, well lets talk about the future for Blue Luster. What can we expect from the band in the next few months?
Brake: I'm hoping to be signed and touring very soon. We have a great album that's on iTunes and is available on the internet or our website. There is no reason this band can't make it to the top.
Carey: Is it hard being under the radar?
Brake: I'm sorry, what?
Carey: Under the radar. Its an expression meaning, not discovered.
Brake: I don't get. Under a radar screen? Like a submarine radar or airplane tower radar?
Carey: No, you idiot. It means that no one knows who you are. Like if something was off a radar screen you wouldn't be able to see it. Thus meaning, off the radar.
Brake: You mean, like sonar? Or like a weather radar? You lost me.
Carey: Forget it.
Brake: Well I tell you one thing, its not easy being in the position we are in. We all have jobs that we need to pay bills with. On top of that, we so badly want to get our music out to the masses and tell people our message of good ol' rock and roll with a new sound. You know what I mean? It's kind of like we're under the radar in the music scene. [long pause] Oh! I get it. Under the radar. Yeah, it is hard especially when we all have jobs that we need to pay bills with. On top of that, we so badly want to get our music out to the masses and tell people our message of good ol' rock and roll with a new sound.
Carey: Thanks for your time
Brake: Where are you going? Are you going to pay for the enchiladas or what? Am I getting paid for this
